Tadewara Marshland
Step into nature and experience a rare marshland preserved by controlled burning
Located at the trailhead of Aso Kuju National Park, the Chojabaru Visitor Center showcases the history and natural beauty of Kuju. It features exhibits on the geology, flora, and fauna of the Kuju mountain range, as well as screenings of the video The Four Seasons of Kuju.
Visitors can also enjoy interactive activities such as quiz and a stamp rally.
Pamphlets with information on hiking and sightseeing are available, making it a perfect resource for your visit.
Behind the center lies the precious Tadewara Marshland, one of Japan's largest mid-altitude marshlands. Registered under the Ramsar Convention in 2005 as Oita’s first such site, it is home to rare wetland plants, including mosses thriving in spring water.
This precious ecosystem is maintained through controlled burning. Wooden boardwalks have been built for visitors to stroll through the marsh, allowing for close observation of seasonal plants in their natural habitat.
The Handa Plateau, known for its gently rolling hills, offers picturesque landscapes dotted with hot spring inns and day-use baths. Visitors can also interact with animals and experience nature at nearby farms and recreational facilities.
Running through the plateau is the Yamanami Highway (Prefectural Route 11), famed as one of Kyushu’s premier scenic drives. The changing scenery along this route provides a delightful way to experience the beauty of the seasons.
