Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden
Peek into the daily lives of wild Japanese macaques!
Located at the foot of Mount Takasaki, which stands 628 meters tall on the border between Oita City and Beppu City, Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden offers the unique opportunity of up close views of around 1,000 wild Japanese macaques that are living free. The feeding time at the Monkey Gathering Area in particular is a must-see event. Every 30 minutes, numerous monkeys gather at the area, creating awe-inspiring scenes of their lively activities! The staff also share insights into the macaques' behavior, individual personalities, and entertaining stories, making it enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
Within the park, you’ll also find the Monkey Museum where you can learn about the history of the macaques living here. The gift shop offers an array of adorable monkey-themed merchandise and local souvenirs, while the Monkey Chaya teahouse serves sea salt soft serve ice cream – a specialty treat.
This is a soothing spot where you can enjoy up-close interactions with Japanese macaques.
