Yusuhara Hachimangu Shrine

Home to a must-see the ancient camphor tree, estimated to be around 3,000 years old

Located about 15 minutes by car from the center of Oita City, this historic shrine was founded in 827. Surrounded by cedar trees, it exudes a solemn and tranquil atmosphere.
The main hall is constructed in a unique architectural style called "Hachiman-zukuri." The shrine features a total of 10 structures, including the main hall, worship hall, and gate tower, which were all designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 2011. The South Gate, in particular, is adorned with intricate carvings of dragons, flowers, and birds, and other motifs, captivating visitors with its delicate beauty. The shrine's treasure hall also displays important cultural artifacts, including swords and Buddhist statues.
The shrine grounds are also home to a massive camphor tree estimated to be around 3,000 years old, which is also popular as a power spot. On the stone walkways, make sure to also keep a look out for the "Kofuku no Ogi-ishi" (Happiness Fanstone), said to grant wishes when stepped on.
