Usuki Takeyoi
A Magical Autumn Night Festival Illuminated by Bamboo Lanterns
This beautiful lantern festival takes place every November throughout the Usuki castle town. Approximately 20,000 takeakari bamboo lanterns, with candles lit inside bamboo tubes, line the streets, casting a soft glow over the traditional townscape of historic merchant homes, samurai residences, and temples. The entire town is transformed into a dreamlike and enchanting scene.
Particularly photogenic spots include the Nioza Historical Road, where bamboo lanterns cover the path, and the stone-paved areas in front of the former Shinko-ji Temple. The stone steps at Tofuku-ji Temple are another must-see. Scattered throughout the venue are intricate bamboo sculptures crafted by local citizens and businesses, showcasing creativity and breathtaking beauty.
Usuki is also home to the ancient Mana Choja legend, which is brought to life through the Hannya-Hime Procession. In this historical reenactment, a princess adorned in splendid attire parades through the streets, creating a picturesque and elegant spectacle.
Various events are held across the venue, ensuring an enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
