Yoshihiro Gaku

A UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: A Traditional Dance and Taiko Drum Performance to Pray for Bountiful Harvests

The Yoshihiro Gaku is a traditional court dance featuring taiko drums, performed at the Gakuniwa Hachiman Shrine in Kunisaki City. Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, it dates back to the late 14th century. It is said to have been initiated by Yoshihiro Masakata, a local lord, to pray for victory in battle and abundant harvests. Today, it is offered annually on the fourth Sunday of July as a prayer for bountiful crops and protection against pests.

During the performance, 49 gakujin (musicians and dancers), dressed in costumes that resemble both warriors and farmers, play taiko drums, flutes, and kane (traditional percussion instruments) while delivering a powerful and dynamic dance. The unique movements are accompanied by chanting and rhythmic drumming. The full repertoire consists of 14 acts, taking over an hour to perform.

As a profound symbol of Japan’s cultural heritage, Yoshihiro Gaku captivates visitors with its historical significance and emotional depth. Its global cultural value has also been recognized, earning it a place on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
