Hachiman Nadagu Shrine

A historic shrine nestled in pine forests with a torii gate overlooking the sea

Hachiman Nadagu Shrine is located in the serene pine forests of Nata Beach, which is known for its stunning coastline. It was established in 729 as a branch shrine of Usa Jingu Shrine. Long ago, the shrine was situated on Ikishima, a small island about 300 meters offshore, where a vivid red torii gate now stands on a rocky outcrop.
The same deity worshiped at Usa Jingu Shrine is also enshrined here, and the shrine's main hall features a long gabled roof and slanted eaves, echoing the design of Usa Jingu. The treasure hall houses three wooden statues of deities that were once central to prayers at Usa Jingu, offering a glimpse into its spiritual heritage.
The torii gate on the offshore island, illuminated by the morning sun, and the view of the sea framed by the shrine's approach torii create breathtaking scenes, making this a popular spot for photography enthusiasts.
