Kitsuki Castle

A renowned cherry blossom spot in Oita where history continues to thrive

Kitsuki Castle, a symbol of Kitsuki City, was originally built in 1394 on a hill between the mouths of two rivers, but was then dismantled in 1615.
Today, the castle site has been developed into Shiroyama Park, and in 1970, a three-story structure modeled after the original castle keep was built at the location of the former keep. This reconstructed keep now serves as a museum and observation deck. Inside, visitors can view valuable historical artifacts such as samurai armor, swords, Buddhist statues, and jars once offered to the shogunate. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of Kitsuki City and Morie Bay.
The site is also renowned for its cherry blossoms, which bloom spectacularly from late March to April, surrounding the castle in a sea of pink. In autumn, the area transforms with vibrant fall foliage, offering stunning seasonal scenery.
The surrounding area preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period, with samurai residences and historic streets giving visitors the feeling of stepping back in time. Each May, the Kitsuki Castle Festival attracts many tourists, adding to the lively charm of this historic site.
