Harajiri Falls

A majestic waterfall that suddenly emerges amidst serene farmland

Known as the "Niagara of the East" and selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, Harajiri Falls is a stunning natural spectacle. The tranquil river flowing through the idyllic farmland suddenly cascades over a 120-meter-wide and 20-meter-high cliff, creating a dramatic scene. The falls were formed around 90,000 years ago by erosion of pyroclastic flows from the eruption of Mt. Aso, leaving behind a sheer vertical wall.
A suspension bridge downstream offers a perfect vantage point to view the entire waterfall head-on. On sunny days, the misty spray catches the light, creating a rainbow over the falls. Visitors can also walk up the promenade to the top of the waterfall, and then go down to the riverbank to experience the power of the roaring water cascading down from the basin side. Each season brings its unique charm: pink cherry blossoms and yellow rapeseed flowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, and vivid autumnal foliage in fall.
Near the waterfall at the Harajiri no Taki Roadside Station, visitors can purchase a variety of items, including fresh agricultural products and shochu liquor, and can also enjoy original soft serve ice cream and dishes made with unique Oita Prefecture ingredients. Seasonal events are also held.
