Sasamuta Shrine

Shrine with breathtaking displays of beautiful wisteria and a sense of living history

Located in Oita City, this historic shrine dates back to the year 278 and is deeply cherished by locals as one of the most important shrines in the Bungo region.
Sasamuta Shrine is renowned for its wisteria. A wisteria tree over 450 years old, with a trunk circumference of about 230 cm, was designated as an Oita City Natural Monument in 1974. Its branches stretch across a wisteria trellis covering approximately 330 square meters. When in full bloom, the flowers create a stunning canopy, covering the sky and captivating everyone who seems it. When the season when the flowers are in bloom, the shrine's Wisteria Festival attracts large crowds, and at night, the wisteria is beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. The shrine's gardens also feature over a hundred Hirado azalea bushes, including some that are over 100 years old. Their vibrant blossoms in full bloom are truly a sight to behold.
The Mannen Bridge at the shrine's entrance forms a picturesque arch, and the view of the wisteria from this spot has become a popular location for photography.
