Chinda Falls

A picturesque landscape of twin waterfalls and ruins

Chinda Falls, one of the geosites in Oita Bungoono Geopark, consists of two stunning cascades: the Odaki (Male Waterfall) and Medaki (Female Waterfall), located approximately 300 meters downstream. The Otaki is around 100 meters wide and 20 meters high, while the Medaki measures 18 meters in height and 4 meters in width. This breathtaking landscape has earned it the nickname Bungo's Niagara. The world-renowned ink painter Sesshu visited the site in the late 15th century and immortalized it in his painting Chinda Bakuzu.

A walking path leads from the parking lot to an observation deck, where visitors can enjoy a close-up view of the majestic Odaki. Along the trail, you'll find the ruins of the Chinda Power Plant, a piece of Kyushu’s industrial heritage from the early 1900s. The stone walls and columns of this abandoned structure exude a magical, Ghibli-like atmosphere, making it a popular spot for photography.

Note: Due to construction, water flow will be stopped, and the waterfalls will not be visible from October 21, 2024, to May 31, 2025.
