Japanese Fairy Tale Festival
A Festival of Fun and Smiles for Children
In Kusu Town, the birthplace of Kurushima Takehiko, who is known as the " Hans Christian Andersen of Japan," a fairy tale festival is held annually on May 5, Children's Day. The event features koinobori (carp-shaped streamers), symbolizing children's growth and success, inspired by the legend of carp climbing waterfalls. The sight of the large koinobori swimming across the blue sky is truly breathtaking. A popular attraction is the chance to walk through a giant koinobori installed on the ground, which always draws crowds of families with children.
At the Mishima venue, which houses the Kurushima Takehiko Memorial Hall, visitors can enjoy puppet shows, picture-story performances, traditional games, woodworking workshops, and pottery experiences – activities that the whole family can enjoy. At the Kusu River riverside venue, there's a fish-catching event where participants can barbecue their freshly caught fish on-site. In addition, there are sales of local specialties and gourmet dishes made with regional ingredients, ensuring a full day of fun and enjoyment for everyone.
