Tsukumi Fan Dance Festival

A Gathering of Traditional Elegance with Graceful Fan Dances

The Tsukumi Fan Dance is a traditional performing art of Tsukumi City with a history spanning approximately 450 years. It is said to have originated as a way to honor the spirits of warriors and farmers who perished in war. Every year in late August, the dance festival gathers participants from all walks of life, including women representing the city, children, and adults.
On the festival day, dancers adorned in vibrant kimonos hold fans in hand and gracefully move to the enchanting sounds of shamisen and taiko drums along the city’s main street. Each pose conveys a specific meaning, such as a warrior drawing a powerful bow or celebrating victory. The dancers' skillful use of fans to express these emotions captivates the audience with artistry and beauty. The elegant movements are imbued with the full range of human emotions to create a stunning performance.
In addition to the fan dance, two other traditional dances, Sankatsu and Tsukumi Ondo, are performed, adding to the colorful and festive atmosphere of a summer evening in Tsukumi.
