Otomo Sorin Cemetery Park

A serene and verdant park honoring a Christian daimyo who once ruled Kyushu

Otomo Sorin, a Sengoku-period military commander, was also known as "Don Francisco," a Christian daimyo.
Located in Tsukumi City, Oita Prefecture, where Sorin passed away, the Otomo Sorin Cemetery Park features both a Buddhist-style grave and a Christian-style grave for him, built by descendants of his former retainers. Although his original grave has been lost over time, the park is surrounded by a solemn grove of cedar trees over 100 years old, adding to its tranquil atmosphere.
On a hilltop within the park stands a bust of Sorin, with eight of his official seals embedded in the stone wall behind it. The lush greenery of the park provides a beautiful backdrop, with cherry blossoms in spring and vivid autumn leaves showcasing Japan’s seasonal beauty.
