Kebesu Festival (Yabusame Festival)

A Sacred and Enigmatic Festival that Dares to Confront the Flames

The Kebesu Festival takes place every year on October 14th as part of the eve of the autumn grand festival at Kushiku Shrine. Centered around a figure called Kebesu – dressed in white robes and wearing an eerie wooden mask – this ritual is shrouded in mystery, with its origins and meaning unknown. The festival is held to ward off misfortune and pray for a bountiful harvest.

As night falls, a large pile of brushwood is set ablaze. The Kebesu charges toward the flames, engaging in a fierce battle with the Toba – fire guardians armed with wooden poles. This intense and dramatic scene draws a large crowd of spectators.

In the latter half of the festival, the Toba thrusts burning brushwood onto poles, scattering sparks as they run through the shrine grounds. It is believed that being showered by these sparks ensures good health and protection from harm, and attendees eagerly yet cautiously await the fire to touch them.

On October 15th, the festivities continue at Imi Betsugusha Shrine, where a yabusame (horseback archery) ritual is performed. This traditional ceremony, which dates back over 300 years, features skilled riders aiming arrows at targets while galloping at full speed, offering prayers for a bountiful harvest and family safety.
