Beppu Jigoku Tour

Experience the raw power of onsen energy through seven unique jigoku ("hells")!

The onsen hot springs at Beppu have been gushing and flowing for more than 1,000 years. In the past, the steam and boiling water from these onsen were considered to be dangerous, which led to them being called jigoku, or "hells". Today, these seven distinct "hells" are popular tourist attractions, and visiting them is known as the "Beppu Jigoku Tour.

The tour includes Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), Tatsumaki Jigoku (Tornado Hell), Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell), Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (Monk's Head Hell), Oniyama Jigoku (Demon Mountain Hell), and Kamado Jigoku (Cooking Pot Hell). Four of these – Umi Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, and Kamado Jigoku – are designated as Places of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government. Highlights include the cobalt-blue, 98℃ waters of Umi Jigoku, the striking red pool of Chinoike Jigoku, the alternating bursts of hot water and steam at Tatsumaki Jigoku, and the pale bluish hues of Shiraike Jigoku. Additionally, free foot baths are available at Umi Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, and Kamado Jigoku – don’t miss the chance to try them out!

Be sure to indulge in the local gourmet treats, such as onsen tamago (eggs cooked in the hot springs), jigoku-mushi yaki pudding (pudding that has been steamed by using the hot water from the hells), and the uniquely colored chinoike pudding.

To make the most of your Jigoku Tour experience, consider purchasing a shared admission ticket, which allows you to visit all seven hells at a discounted price. Alternatively, you can take a guided sightseeing bus, which efficiently covers all seven sites in about three hours – highly recommended!

Explore our uniquely charming hells!

“Hell” here refers to scenic hot springs. It's not a scary place. Enjoy the vivid colors and beautiful steam created by nature. Each “hell” offers gourmet food you can only find there, footbaths, and scenic spots.

Umi Jigoku
Characterized by its cobalt blue pool resembling the sea and a Japanese garden. It looks refreshing, but the water temperature reaches 98 degrees Celsius. We recommend viewing the entire scene from the second-floor terrace. From summer to autumn mornings, giant water lilies (Oonibasu) bloom within the grounds.

Oniishi Bozu Jigoku
A mysterious hell where gray mud boils. The mud bubbles resemble shaved heads, hence the name incorporates the Japanese word ‘bozu’ for bald head.
It features a geyser called ‘Oni no Takaibiki’ (demon's snoring), where steam erupting from underground creates sounds reminiscent of a demon's snoring.

Kamado Jigoku
This popular hell features six distinct hells in one location. Enjoy various unique hells, including blue and orange hot springs and mud-infused hot springs. Additionally, the “Tropical Fish Pavilion,” heated by the hot spring's thermal energy, allows visitors to see giant fish like the pirarucu.

The view from the observation deck is perfect for photography, with the vivid vermilion color shining brightly on clear days. Footbaths, shops, and restaurants are available, where you can enjoy local specialties like the “Blood Pond Hell Burger” and “Blood Pond Pudding.”

Tatsumaki Jigoku
Here you can see a geyser where 150°C hot air and steam stored underground erupts to the surface. It erupts for 6 to 10 minutes every 30 to 40 minutes. It is designated as a Beppu City Natural Monument and a National Scenic Spot. You can also enjoy gelato made with fruit harvested at the Dragon Whirlwind Farm.

therapeutic onsen pairing

therapeutic onsen pairing  refers to a bathing experience where one soaks in two hot springs with different mineral compositions in a prescribed sequence to draw out special benefits through synergistic effects. By combining waters of distinct mineral properties, this approach transcends the simple sum of “1+1,” creating an exceptionally effective and luxurious way to enjoy hot springs—where the result can be ‘3’ or even “4.”
