Bungo Mori Roundhouse (Bungo Mori Roundhouse Museum)
A fan-shaped locomotive roundhouse etched with the scars of war

Built in 1934 to coincide with the full opening of the Kyudai Line connecting Kurume Station in Fukuoka to Oita Station in Oita Prefecture, this fan-shaped concrete locomotive roundhouse stands as a unique relic in Kyushu. It has been recognized as a Modern Industrial Heritage site, and is the only surviving structure of its kind in the region.
During World War II, the depot served as a hub for military transport and was targeted by strafing attacks from U.S. fighter planes. The bullet marks left on its exterior walls serve as a somber reminder of its tragic past.
Today, the site has been transformed into Bungo Mori Roundhouse Park, featuring an SL29612 steam locomotive, a relic from the Taisho era (1912 to 1926), which warmly welcomes visitors.
From March to November, the park hosts monthly events on the second Sunday, including the Monthly Roundhouse Market and the Roundhouse Festival, where visitors can enjoy activities like mini-train rides, carp streamer displays, and stalls offering food and crafts.
The adjacent Bungo Mori Roundhouse Museum offers an interactive journey into railway history. Exhibits feature materials on the former Bungo Mori Roundhouse and railroads, along with family-friendly attractions such as railway-themed picture books, a wooden pool for play, and origami-making activities.
Tsunomure Castle
An impenetrable stone fortress built into the mountain's terrain

Today, the castle’s stone walls, including those of the Ninomaru and Sannomaru, remain as testaments to its historical significance. Built using the anou-zumi technique – where unshaped stones are expertly stacked – the site offers a glimpse into the evolution from earthen to stone-based castles. In 2005, it was designated as a National Historic Site.
Why not take a walk through the historical legacy left by Kakumure Castle?
One of the highlights is the 7-meter-high stone wall near the Ninomaru’s main gate, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship of historical stone masons.
As you make your way up to the castle, there are numerous historical artifacts, such as the Tsunomure Shrine and scattered stone statues, each telling its own story.
The observation point along the way offers stunning viewpoints, including vistas of Mt. Hane, Mt. Kirikabu, and the Kuju mountain range. Reaching the main keep at the summit provides a profound sense of accomplishment and connection to the past.
For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Sannomaru, providing convenient access to the castle trail.
Jion Falls
A spectacular waterfall said to bring good luck, steeped in legends of serpents and dragon gods

Jion Falls, located on the western border of Hita City's Amagase Town and Kusu District's Kusu Town, is a waterfall brimming with romance and legend – stories of a great serpent and dragon gods lend a mythical charm to its name. The upper falls are surrounded by steep cliffs, offering a breathtaking view directly from the front. The lower falls allow visitors to venture behind the cascading water. According to legend, walking around the falls clockwise brings good fortune, so be sure to follow this tradition when visiting.
The falls are said to have a cooling effect that feels like the temperature has dropped by 5 degrees, making it a popular summer destination for those seeking relief from the heat. At night, the illuminated falls create a mystical atmosphere, offering a completely different experience from daytime.
Note: Due to damage from the heavy rains in July 2020, access to the area behind the falls is currently restricted.
