Bungo Futamigaura Shimenawa Replacement and New Year Fireworks

A Guinness World Record Ceremony and Early Morning Fireworks to Welcome the New Year

Bungo Futamigaura, renowned as one of Japan's premier spots for viewing the first sunrise of the year, hosts a ritual on the second Sunday of December each year to replace the shimenawa hung on the Meoto Iwa rocks with a new one in preparation for the New Year.

The shimenawa, a sacred rope believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune, stretches an impressive 65 meters and weighs over 2 tons. Recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest shimenawa in Japan, it is replaced annually through the combined efforts of local residents and volunteers, as it becomes worn from exposure to the elements.

On the day of the replacement, "wish plaques" are sold, allowing visitors to write their prayers and have them woven into the center of the shimenawa for blessings. Additionally, from December 24 to January 1, the Meoto Iwa and nearby walking paths are illuminated at night, transforming the area into an enchanting, glowing scene.

The highlight of the festivities is the New Year Fireworks on the early morning of January 1. Just before the first sunrise appears, vibrant fireworks light up the dawn sky, celebrating the arrival of a bright new year with grandeur and beauty.
