Usuki Gion Festival
Where 400 Years of History Come Alive — The Usuki Gion Festival
The Usuki Gion Festival, Usuki’s largest summer festival, has been celebrated since 1643 (Kan’ei 20). During the Owatari (procession to the Otabisho) and Okaeri (return procession), sacred parades featuring shrine attendants and elaborately decorated festival floats make their way through the town. Highlights include the unique Oyari-furi spear performance that marks the beginning of the divine procession, as well as the distinct musical styles performed by the two festival floats. Recognized as one of Oita Prefecture’s Three Great Gion Festivals, the festival is also designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Oita Prefecture.
